Ganoderma Lucidum: Often called Reishi or Red Mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are mushrooms used in the practice of medicine and are found in many natural and homemade remedies. Many species of mushrooms, ganoderma the most popular, have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years and is best documented in the East, China and Malaysia. Medicinal mushrooms are now being studied more than ever by many ethno botanists and medical researchers around the world. The ability of some of these mushrooms to inhibit tumor growth and enhance aspects of the immune system has been a subject of research and many clinical studies for approximately the past 50 years. Preclinical studies suggest that compounds from up to 200 species of mushrooms may inhibit or slow down tumor growth, but required dosage and effects on humans is mostly unknown. The ancient Chinese were probably a lot more familiar with dosage and effects of the mushrooms then present day researchers. Fungus research has led to the discovery of many pharmaceutical drugs, including penicillin, cyclosporine, griseofulvin, cephalosporin, ergometrine as well as the popular statin class of cholesterol reducing drugs. I believe the drug companies do not want the general public to be aware of the benefits of mushrooms just because they cannot patent something that grows in nature.

Healthy Coffee

Adding good quality healthy mushrooms to your coffee can make for a great cup of coffee. I have purchased coffee that have mushrooms blended with the  coffee and in one case the mushrooms made the coffee taste mellower, sweeter and to me one of the best tasting coffee that I have ever drank. I do drink one cup of this mushroom coffee "Java Impact" almost everyday but because of the cost of it I limit my consumption to just one cup. For an 8oz bag the price is $20 wholesale and $30 retail. I do want to mention that this Java Impact mushroom coffee has 14 different mushrooms in its blend including the one most everyone knows of, ganoderma.

I also add my own mushrooms to my whole bean coffee when I grind the beans. Fresh whole beans is the best way to make your own mushroom coffee. I make my coffee mushroom blend about 25% mushrooms and 75% coffee beans.

Shiitake Mushrooms in a one gallon bag cost $15 at a farmers market in New Orleans.

I bought these mushrooms from a farmer at a farmers market in New Orleans. She grows these organically and Shiitake is the main one she grows. I purchased this one gallon bag for $15. The mushrooms are dehydrated and should remain good for several years. From my research I found that these mushrooms will lose some of their medicinal properties over time but even after a year they are still good to use and still have most of their medicinal properties.
