What to look for when buying an Espresso Machine?

When I started my research on Amazon I found that there were many different espresso machines with a ton of reviews by people all over the world. Reading the reviews of the different machines I found that there are some important points that all espresso machines should have.

I took into consideration the following:

• Steam driven or pump driven?
• Maximum pump pressure?
• Kind of boiler?
• Self priming operation?
• Thermostat available?
• Size of the water tank and can it be cleaned easily?
• The size and design of the machine?

Don't make the mistake and buy an espresso maker based strictly on price because more expensive does not always translate into better product. Nowadays it is hard to find a quality built long lasting product. So what I have done is taken the most important points that people bring up in their reviews of these espresso makers and will explain each one.

A characteristic that sets the DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker apart from its counterparts is the layer of reddish-brown crema that can be found floating on the top of the drink. This foamy crema is the favorite part of the drink for most espresso lovers and it's part of the espresso itself. You can only get this foamy substance if you are using the pump-driven espresso makers as the steam-driven ones are not able to produce this crema because of the lack of pressure they are able to create.

In order to get that perfect cup of great tasting espresso with the foamy crema on top, your machine must be able to exert enough pressure to push the hot water through the espresso grinds. This will also ensure that you get better extraction and thus better flavor. A steam-driven machine will only be able to develop 2 – 3 bars of pressure but a pump-driven one will hit 4 – 5 times more, so if you want better tasting, crema topped espresso, you have to get a pump-driven espresso maker.

The DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker is a 15-bar pump-driven machine that exerts enough pressure to push the hot water through the espresso grinds. This will also ensure that you get better extraction and thus better flavor.

Stainless steel boiler

Your coffee is made in the boiler of your coffee machine, therefore, you have to ensure that it is kept in good conditions. It must have good heat retention properties and be resistant to corrosion, otherwise you may even have to replace the machine with a new one.

With the Delonghi espresso maker, you are assured of a solid home espresso machine because the boiler is made of stainless steel. As you maintain it well, this machine will be able to last you for many years.

2 thermostats for separation

As an espresso lover, you probably already know the importance of getting the perfect temperature for your water and steam to make that ideal cup of coffee. With the Delonghi EC155, you get two thermostats which will separately control the water and steam pressure.

Self-priming operation

Unless you like to go through the hassle of grinding and tamping your own espresso seeds, otherwise you will find that pod coffee is very convenient when you want make a cup of coffee. As such, you will want your espresso machine to be able to accommodate E.S.E. pods and ground espresso. This DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker has a dual-function filter, so it is able to do just that. It also comes with self-priming operation which allows you to brew your favorite beverage without one of those annoying start-up preparations that many other coffee machines require.

What about the water tank?

Regardless of whether you intend to use your espresso maker everyday or only occasionally, you will still want a water tank to be of a reasonable size and you definitely do not want any hassle in maintaining its cleanliness. This espresso machine has a 35-ounce water tank which can be easily removed, so you will be able to wash it or fill it up easily at the sink.

Size does matter!

This 1000-watt DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker measures just 7-1/2 by 9-1/2 by 11-1/8 inches, so it will not have any problem fitting in with the rest of your kitchen appliances on your countertop. It weighs just 9.9 pounds, so you will not have any issues with moving it around too. As for blending with the rest of your kitchen layout, this machine is black in color so it will be fit in with any design and theme.
